Everything You Need to Know About Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Everything You Need to Know About Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Getting upper & lower eyelid surgery can fix a multitude of flaws, from cosmetic problems like sagging and bagging under the eyes to medical issues like droopy upper lids that obscure your vision.

At Ventura Eye Institute in Camarillo, California, our professional team of eye care specialists provides upper & lower lid surgery by performing a complete blepharoplasty to give you better sight and more confidence in your looks.

What happens during blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, which covers both upper & lower lid surgery, is designed to remove excess skin, fat, and even muscle tissue from your eyelids. This minor surgery can transform your eyes, getting rid of under-the-eye bags and circles, droopy lids that hang over your eye, fat that causes a lumpy look, and saggy skin that creates a multitude of folds and creases.

The “eye lift” surgery itself only takes a short period of time per eye. Your provider marks where skin and tissue needs to be removed and tightened, and removes it quickly, hiding the incisions in the natural creases of each lid.

Your recovery

Once your upper & lower lid surgery is finished, you’ll stay in the office for a short time recovering from the anesthesia. Since you’ve been sedated, you’ll need a ride home. We’ll be releasing you after a short monitoring period, and try to schedule upper & lower lid surgery early in the day so you can go home before evening.

Expect some swelling and bruising around your eyes and even stretching down into your cheeks for a week or so following the surgery. We’ll make sure you have appropriate pain relief, and cold therapy can help immensely.

If you wear contacts, don’t use them until you get the all clear from our office. Wear your glasses instead. Expect some dry eyes and itching of the eyelid skin; this is normal and part of the healing process. Of course, if you have any signs of infection, like redness, swelling beyond what you’ve been told to expect, fluid seeping through the stitches, or a fever, contact our office right away.

Make sure you use all after-care products as recommended. These can include eye drops, ointments, pain relievers, and cold packs. Sleep on your back if you can, and don’t press on or rub your eyes during recovery. After a couple of weeks, you’ll revisit our office, and the stitches will be removed. Another week or two of healing, and your eye lift will be complete.
