Blurry Vision or Glare at Night? Early Signs of Cataracts You Shouldn’t Ignore
It’s a common saying that “night vision gets worse as you age,” but it’s not just aging that makes your vision go blurry or has you fighting glare from oncoming headlights at night. There could be something going on with your eyes that is fixable.
Our eye health specialists at Ventura Eye Institute in Camarillo, California, can screen you for cataract formation and even replace the clouded lens in your eye with a brand new one to restore your sight with cataract surgery.
Cataract basics
The lens of your eye is normally clear. However, with age, small protein deposits can build up on the lens, creating cloudy spots, or cataracts. The clouding changes the light passing through the lens, causing clouded or blurry vision and increased glare, especially at night.
Other common symptoms of cataracts include:
- A frequent requirement for new prescription lenses
- An increasing need for brighter light in order to read or do other activities
- Seeing "halos" around lights
- Finding that colors seem yellow or faded
- Having double vision in one eye
Fortunately, unlike many other types of age-related vision loss, cataracts are fully treatable, and your vision can be restored. Don’t ignore early warning signs of cataracts; see an eye specialist and find out if cataracts have formed so you can get help.
Cataract surgery
A lot of people are understandably nervous when the phrase “eye surgery” comes up, but cataract surgery is one of the most common, quickest, and most successful surgeries. Your eye is easily numbed for the surgery, and you may also receive a mild sedative if you need it for anxiety.
At Ventura Eye Institute, we use a technique called small incision cataract surgery to replace the faulty lens in your eye. Your surgeon makes a tiny incision at the front of your eye, then uses an ultrasound device to break up the clouded lens.
The disintegrated lens is sucked out through the small slit, and a new lens is folded and inserted. The new lens unfolds and centers itself, and there is no need for stitches — the incision is so small it seals itself.
Additional benefits of cataract surgery
If you have astigmatism or need multifocal lenses, we offer premium intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can correct these vision problems. You might not even need glasses or contacts after the surgery. We can also perform an iStent inject procedure at the same time as cataract surgery to manage intraocular pressure and relieve symptoms of glaucoma.
